At the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix, driver Lorenzo Bandini, in the

Ferrari 312 F1-67 car #18

did not finish the race due to a fatal accident. He was running in second place on lap 82 when his car crashed and caught fire at the harbor chicane.

Race Incident and Aftermath
On May 7, 1967, the left rear wheel of Bandini’s Ferrari clipped the inside guard rail while entering the harbor chicane. The car overturned, struck a light pole, and collided with the trackside straw bales, which caused the fuel tank to rupture and ignite. Bandini was trapped in the burning car for several minutes during a difficult rescue operation.
Bandini was extricated with third-degree burns over 70% of his body and multiple chest fractures. He tragically succumbed to his injuries three days later, on May 10, 1967, at the age of 31.
The incident was a significant factor in leading to improved safety reforms in Formula 1, including the eventual banning of straw bales as trackside barriers. A trophy, the Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini, has been awarded annually since 1992 to honor individuals for commendable performance in motorsport.
Race Result
Bandini was classified as a retirement (DNF – Did Not Finish) as he did not complete the full race distance. His teammate Chris Amon finished third in the other Ferrari.
